Mud masks have always scared me a little bit. When I think of mud, I think of the gross, gravel-filled mud on my parents farm that smelled like cow dung and mildew. For this reason, I've always steered clear of mud masks. I've heard wonderful things, but I just wasn't mentally prepared to try one. Then I saw one of my favorite companies, Instanatural, had a Dead Sea Mud Mask. Now I have come to absolutely love Instanatural and Dead Sea anything has become a fad in my cabinet, so I couldn't just pass up this opportunity. People from all over the world trek to the Dead Sea to take advantage of the Dead Sea's mineral benefits, to have it jarred up and sent to me at my home is a blessing.
Instanatural's Dead Sea Mud Mask contains pure Dead Sea mud, organic shea butter, organic jojoba oil, organic aloe vera, organic calendula oil and hickory bark extract. It's a natural moisturizer, pore reducer and skin cleanser. It has potential to help with dry skin, oily skin, acne, blemishes, wrinkles and fine lines. Of all these things, I have severe dry skin, blemishes and, even at my age, wrinkles and fine lines.
Upon opening the jar, I braced myself for a smell most foul. Fearing the scents of the dung and

mildew of my youth. With a quick waft of the contents, I was presently surprised. There was absolutely no smell. This was wonderful. My first apprehension about mud masks had been alleviated. I played with it a bit, it felt like a silky mud, not the gravelly mud I was accustomed to. There wasn't any grit and it actually felt good. There was no turning back now, I had to try it. Since my husband was out for a guys night, this was my time to mud up and relax.
I cleaned off the days makeup and dirt, using my regular make up remover then just warm water instead of my daily cleanser. I used an old foundation brush to apply the mud in a thin layer, being sure to leave some space between my eyes and lips (the directions state to avoid these areas). It went on smooth and cool. I then sprawled out in bed to enjoy some Untold Stories of the ER (I love that show).

(Ignore the fact I look completely creeped out, I don't know how else I was supposed to pose with mud, haha.) It had a surprising cooling effect, much like mentholatum, but much tamer. I'm not sure that was supposed to happen or if the cool air just caused this to happen.
The cooling sensation subsided and it started to dry. This was a little uncomfortable at first. It felt really tight and itched a little bit, which was quite irritating. They recommended 10-15 minutes, but I was only at about six and wasn't sure I could continue without scratching my face off. I tried just training my focus on how the doctors were going to cure a man with ethylene glycol poisoning. I only left the mask on for ten minutes. It's all I could take. I used a wash rag with warm water and started removing the mud with circular motions. It came off really easily, without any hard scrubbing. My skin felt soft and refreshed. The week's end blackheads were gone and the dry patches were soothed. I am pretty happy with the results and with the product in general. The only annoyance was the itching and tightness while it dried. As a one time a week treatment, I'd probably continue it's use. A couple minutes of annoyance is definitely worth the benefit. You just have to find something to distract you from wanting to scratch. If you are looking for a scentless, soft mud mask this is a definite must try.
